St. Mark’s Square is the heart of Venice. It is the only one in the city called “piazza.” Here stands St. Mark’s Basilica, famous for its golden mosaics and built in the 18th century. Other notable landmarks include the Doge’s Palace with the Bridge of Sighs and the 99-meter Campanile bell tower (you can go up by elevator). During carnival days, the square is especially crowded.
Walking sightseeing tour in Venice
Carnival events (taxi/public transport required)
Throughout the city there are street performances, concerts, and costume parades. The program changes every year, but traditional events are preserved: the best mask competition, the Flight of the Angel from the bell tower to St. Mark’s Square, and the water parade along the Grand Canal (Canal Grande). Most events are free; you just need to be in the right place at the right time.

Walk through the Cannaregio district
This is Venice’s largest and most “authentically Venetian” district, home to one-third of the city’s population. The main street, Strada Nova, stretches from the train station to Rialto, but it’s essential to explore the narrow alleys. The Jewish Ghetto contains five synagogues dating from the 16th–17th centuries and a museum. The word “ghetto” originated here, from the foundries called “getto.” The Madonna dell’Orto Church houses Tintoretto’s last works.
Evening carnival (taxi/public transport required)
After sunset, the carnival transforms: torch-lit processions through narrow streets, candlelit performances in palazzos, masked balls in historic cafés. St. Mark’s Square is illuminated, and the costumed figures become even more mysterious. Some bars host carnival parties with entry allowed only in masks or costumes.

09:00 – Transfer to Verona (116 km – 1.5 hrs)
11:00–13:00 – Sightseeing tour in Verona (2 hrs)
Verona is known for its romantic atmosphere. Shakespeare made it famous, but the city offers much more than Juliet’s balcony. The Roman Arena, dating to the 1st century, is the third largest amphitheater after the Colosseum; in summer it hosts open-air opera performances. Piazza delle Erbe, with its frescoed buildings from the 15th century, still displays mythological scenes despite fading colors. The Basilica of San Zeno preserves 11th-century bronze doors depicting biblical scenes. From the medieval Scaliger Bridge, there is a beautiful view of the Adige River.
Juliet’s House
A visit to Verona would be incomplete without its most famous landmark. The 13th-century house once belonged to the Dal Cappello family, from which the name “Capuleti” derives. The balcony was added in the 1930s for a film production. In the courtyard stands Juliet’s statue, whose right breast has been polished by tourists’ touches. The walls are covered with love notes left by visitors. Inside, the museum tells the story of the legend and displays costumes from the film.
